The Lviv Dance Ensemble had its inception more than 40 years ago, under the auspices of the UCWL #2 of St. George’s Ukrainian Catholic Church, who offer their unwavering support … appreciating and recognizing just how invaluable it is, to encourage and propagate the rich traditions of Ukrainian Culture and Heritage. The group has 70 dancers, aged 4 – 27.

Under the artistic directorship of Dr. Sally Shlapak, the senior dancers present a unique repertoire of folk, classical and character dance, reflective of the different regions of Ukraine. The Ensemble performs in and around the Oshawa, Whitby and Durham regions, for numerous and diverse venues; too, for the Bishop and other religious and cultural events. They have revelled in performing at weddings, anniversaries, and New Years’ celebrations, at the World Youth Day celebrations, at the Toronto C.N.E., the Oakville Ukrainian Festival (for the Ukrainian Canadian Congress), at Barrie’s Ukie Fest, at London’s Ukie Fest, at the Bloor West Ukrainian Festival (a few times!) AND have travelled twice to Disney World, Florida, to perform 4 shows each! Too, this year, they performed at Ivana Kupala, in Hawkstone, and now here, at the Capital Ukrainian Festival in Ottawa.

Lastly, noteworthy to mention … Mrs. Iris Ehmke … the lady responsible for sewing and maintaining all costumes for over 22 years!
